Course Description

The broad goal of The Innovation Lab and Grand Challenges (ILGC) is to get students to observe, relate and solve the societal challenges in a sustainable manner using their technical and engineering skills that they will learn concurrently in other courses. These challenging problems may be picked up from their surroundings which could be a) the campus (where they will live for the next 4 years), b) the place where they belong to (their city, town, village, state, country) or c) the global challenges that they come across through some announcements of competitions that they may aspire for.

The semester one course in just an unfolding of this grandeur and schema. It takes the student through some of the success stories of how a simple observation seeds an idea of solving that and ultimately coming up with a product which addresses that problem. While taking them through these story-lanes, this course engages them in discussions on empathy, observation, problem solving technique, lateral thinking and teamwork. This course also plays a role of a catalyst by provoking them to think if they see similar opportunities/challenging issues around them which they should solved.

Working collaboratively in teams, the students understand the diversity and complexity of such challenges. Seeding the temperament of team building and working in team is one of the main objectives of this course which will go along with them all through the entire duration of the program.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will have had the opportunity to:

  • Understand there are different ways to observe your surroundings

  • Accept that as an aspiring engineer, they are obliged to develop a knack of looking into those situations as a problem-solver

  • Appreciate that these challenging situations may be quite diverse and complex

  • Realize that no matter how complex the situations are, these can be divided into small goals while solving them

  • Work effectively in team to meet the goal

  • Cherish the joy of final accomplishment

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this course, students should be able to

  1. Identify and articulate key aspects of societal Grand Challenges | Knowledge Outcome

  1. Empathize with and consider the needs and concerns of the society in which they live| Knowledge Outcome

  1. Be able to include diverse inputs of other team members in articulating observations | Knowledge Outcome
